Together 4 pages, 4to, each on official stationery . LETTERS FROM EACH OF THE FOUR STAGES OF COOLIDGE'S POLITICAL CAREER. The 5 November 1910 ALS, as Mayor of Northampton, is a recommendation "to whom it may concern," for Richard Kennedy ("sober, industrious, and worthy"). The 2 August 1920 TLS as governor to Jay P. Brewer details his common ancestry with Brewer: "My grandmother was Sarah Almeda Brewer and a sister of your father." Another Brewer ancestor, Coolidge points out, fought at Bunker Hill. The 10 November 1921 TLS as Vice-President is to Attorney General Harry Daugherty, soon to become infamous for his role in the Teapot Dome scandal. Here Coolidge offers him use of the Vice-Presidents office on Capitol Hill. "I think you might find this a considerable convenience whenever the Senate is in session." In the 1 July 1927 TLS, as President, to Charles D. Hilles, "Silent Cal" explains why he has not yet answered the two invitations he has received to attend the opening of the Holland Tunnel in New York: "I have replied to both, reserving a final decision." He decided to go. Flanked by New York Governor Al Smith and New Jersey Governor Harry Moore, Coolidge turned the key that opened the tunnel to traffic--the same key used to open the Panama Canal in 1915. (4)
