[COOKERY AND WINE]. COCKS, Charles (1812-1854) [and FÉRET, Michel-Édourd (1814-1889), association]. Bordeaux: Its Wines, and The Claret Country. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1846. 8vo. With lithographed frontispiece, “General View of Bordeaux.” xii, [1]-[216], [32, publisher’s catalogue] pp. Publisher’s original full brown cloth, boards decoratively paneled and stamped in blind, spine stamped and ruled in blind and lettered in gilt (binding worn, soiled, chipped (the spine is missing a small piece, which is included) joints starting, rear hinge starting, text generally toned, one signature (pp. 147-166) is loose but present, several leaves creased, title-page and dedication page are neatly trimmed a bit at lower margin (no apparent loss of text - trimmed about ¼”), bookseller’s ticket on rp.) Good. THE SCARCE TRUE FIRST EDITION OF THIS LANDMARK GUIDE TO THE WINES OF BORDEAUX. Cocks, an English professor living in the French wine country, decided to make a tourist guide to the wines and the history of the wine-producing country of Bordeaux. This guide also contained a list of the various wine makers of the region and their premier vintages. This was done before the 1855 official classification of the wine region in order of merit (this work is considered to be one of the foundations of this classification). This edition is exceedingly rare and difficult to find. This copy is from the library of English writer A. J. Symonds (1900-1941) with his bookplate and pencil signature on the front endleaves, and his pencil note (“August 1934”) on the rfep. In 1850, Féret collaborated with Cocks to create the 1850 first French edition, Bordeaux et ses Vins, with updated printings being made to this very day (sometimes referred to as “The Bordeaux Bible” or “Cocks & Féret” or “Le Féret.”) Cagle 140.
