Constitutions des treize Etats-Unis de l'Amerique. A Philadelphie; et se trouve a Paris: Pierres & Pissot, 1783. [4], 540 pp. 8vo. Contemporary polished calf, spine gilt. Title page lightly foxed, else very clean internally, later paper boards, front hinge starting, wear to extremities, head and tail of spine chipped. First edition. One of 500 copies. Immediately following his negotiations with Great Britain to secure American independence, Benjamin Franklin as Ambassador to Paris, spearheaded this French translation of the constitutions of the thirteen original states. The translation was completed by the Duc de la Rochefoucauld, and include over 50 explanatory footnotes by Franklin himself. Also included are the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the treaties between the United States and France, the Low Countries, and Sweden. The title page includes the first printing of the Seal of the United States which Franklin designed for this edition. Howes C716; Sabin 16118.
