FIRST EDITION, 32-page publisher's catalogue dated "10/02" at end, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Conrad on the front free endpaper: "To Miss H. Capes with the Author's kind regards. 20 Nov. 1902" (publication date was 13 November). Smith 8; Connolly, The Modern Movement , 14. The recipient, Harriet Capes, was a good friend of Conrad's; in 1908 he dedicated A Set of Six to her. She later edited the selection Wisdom and Beauty from Conrad (1915).
