London: Methuen [1915]. 8vo, original red cloth (rear cover a trifle soiled, endpaper cracked at front inner hinge) , IN THE RARE PICTORIAL DUST JACKET (a long tear across front panel repaired on verso, a piece chipped from top outer corner of rear panel with loss of a few letters in advertisement); half morocco slipcase. First English Edition, published six months after the American, 32-page publisher's catalogue at end dated "8/5/15," THE DEDICATION COPY, inscribed by the author beneath the printed dedication (which reads, "To Perceval and Maisie Gibbon"): "Their own copy of the English 1st. edition with Conrad's love." The English short story writer Perceval Gibbon and his wife Maisie were very close and long-time friends of the Conrads; Victory came out in England on 24 September 1915 and was a great popular success. Smith 20; Keating 114. Provenance : Jonathan Goodwin (sale, Part I, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 29 March 1977, lot 35).
