CONRAD, JOSEPH. 'Twixt Land and Sea. Tales. A Smile of Fortune, The Secret Sharer, Freya of the Seven Islas. London: Dent 1912. 8vo, original green cloth, rear cover a trifle marked, light and mostly marginal foxing to a number of leaves, half morocco slipcase . FIRST EDITION, THE RARE FIRST ISSUE (one of about 20 copies) with "Freya of the Secret Isles" on the front cover (rather than the correct "Freya of the Seven Isles"). HUGH WALPOLE'S COPY (the author and close friend of Conrad) with his ownership inscription (dated "Oct: 1912" -- publication month) and with his armourial bookplate and his "Brackenburn" book label. Keating 97; Smith 17: "The stamp [for the binding] was incorrectly made and the error caught almost immediately, although about 20 copies went into circulation." Contains the first book appearance of "The Secret Sharer." A very good copy.
