London: Unwin 1895. 8vo, original dark green cloth t.e.g., others uncut, slight wear at head of spine and lower fore-corners, front endpaper cracked at inner hinge, dark green half morocco gilt folding case. FIRST EDITION of the author's first book, the presumed first state with the missing letters in the last two lines on p. 110. Tipped in before the half-title is a fine PEN-AND-INK DRAWING BY CONRAD of a minstrel with a lute singing to a seated lady, 175 x 112mm. (7 x 4 1/2in.), with integral blank, a little foxed , with a pencilled note in an unidentified hand at bottom: "Done by Joseph Conrad in Paris about 1893." Smith 1. Bookplate of Francis Edwin Murray.
