.577 caliber. 39" round barrel secured by three rounded screw clamping bands. SN: NSN. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion rifle musket. Lock unmarked. Left breech with London commercial proof and view marks as well as a 25 gauge mark, indicating .577 caliber. Breech with additional S.W inspection mark. Top of comb, forward of buttplate tang with Sinclair, Hamilton & Company {Crown} / SH / G3 inspection stamp, and counterpane with script JC cartouche in an oval which are the initials of English inspector of Confederate arms in England, Isaac Curtis who signed his name with an archaic "J" for the "I" on period documents. Toe line of stock with TAYLOR & NEWMAN maker's mark. Retains correct pattern 900-yard ladder rear sight, musket style combination front sight and socket bayonet lug and both sling swivels. Bands reatin the doughnut shaped protectors on the ends of the screws. Retains an original, full-length jag head ramrod with good threads at the end. A very nice condition example of a Confederate marked Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket which was the second most used long arm of the American Civil War. Condition: Fine. Metal with no finish and scattered, streaky discolored oxidation and some surface roughness. Some light pitting here and there. Markings clear, mechanically functional, good bore with strong rifling and moderate oxidation. Stock lightly cleaned with retaining good edges and lines, ramrod channel with about a 2" section of filler where the wood chipped and slivered. Otherwise wood with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
