.58 caliber, 21" barrel, marked behind the notched rear barrel sight: Cook & Brothers, Athens GA 1863. S/N 2719, rifled with three large lands and grooves, bottom of breech block marked with an F over a 2. On the left side of the breech it is marked Proved, lockplate marked in the rear with a Confederate flag, forward of the hammer Cook & Brother, Athens GA the serial number 2719 and underneath dated 1863. Inside of the lock is marked a large "C" with 19 on the lockplate and also on the sear bar. Swivel ramrod, brass bands, brass triggerguard with no sling swivel, brass butt plate. This carbine is not fitted with sling swivels but does have the brass carbine ring bar, missing the ring. Walnut stock stamped on the right tang area 1949 and also on the rear of the lock mortise. Listed on page 32 of the A. E. Brooks Collection and his inventory number 1949. Provenance: A.E. Brooks Collection (U.S. Cartridge Company Collection) M.C. Young Collection Condition: Barrel is very sharp and crisp with clear markings. Nice untouched patina. Lock has clear and sharp markings, nice mottled grey to brown patina. The reverse of the lock still retaining all of the original case colors with a heat blued bridle. Brass bands,carbine ring, trigger guard and buttplate has nice untouched mustard colored patina. Stock is untouched with nice opened-grained wood. Stock with nice sharp and crisp edges. “The Cook and Brothers carbines are scarce in and of themselves? This example is as fine and original throughout as a collector could hope to find on today’s market.”
