Comprising: 1) The U.S. Model REO Ship's Receiver, serial no. 1824, having a wooden cabinet painted grey and bearing aluminum contractor's label and red label reading: WARNING/Do Not Use Aboard Ship/Unsafe Radiation Limits. Size: 7 inches X 8 inches X 13 3/4 inches. 2) Corona portable typewriter, serial no. C290968, contained in original black case. Both items were presented to Harold B. Thurber at his "Singing Valley Ranch" by his lifetime friend, Admiral William H. "Bull" Halsey. Halsey told Thurber that the radio was his personal radio carried by him from ship to ship throughout WWII and that the typewriter was the one used to type up the original draft of the unconditional surrender that ended the war with Japan, September 2, 1945. The radio and typewriter are accompanied by the following material: a) A copy of the original surrender b) Six assorted 8 X 10 glossy black & white press photos documenting a visit by Halsey to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, March 26, 1956, on the occasion of Halsey's retirement [one photo shows Mr. & Mrs H.B. Thurber disembarking from an airplane with Halsey]. b) Autographed sepia photograph of Halsey in fatigue uniform, sitting at his desk aboard ship. Inked inscription reads: To H.B. Thurber/with all good/wishes from his/friend./Bill Halsey. c) Another autographed portrait photo of Halsey with dress uniform, posed in front of a map of the Pacific theater, smoking a cigarette. Inked inscription reads: To H.B. Thurber, my very good friend, with all good wishes./WF Halsey, Fleet Admiral, U.S. Navy. d) Typed letter from Halsey to Thurber dated April 10, 1958, written on Halsey's Fleet Admiral letterhead. Signed by Halsey. e) Holographic letter from Gregg Ransburg apparently to Thurber describing the copy of the surrender given to him by Ransburg. f) Original copy of The Arizona Daily Star dated November 4, 1945 with headline We Conquer Japan. g) Typed poem entitled: Nimitz and Halsey and Me by Patrick McCoy. h most importantly two notarized letters from Thurber's neice attesting to the authenticity of the items. Condition: 1) Radio appears intact, the top and sides stripped of finish. Electric cord heavily cracked and needs replacing to operate radio safely. 2) Typewriter needs servicing, the keys are inoperable, apparently from dried oil. Case with minor scuffs.
