COMBE, WILLIAM A History of Madeira ... illustrative of the Costumes, Manners, and Occupations of the Inhabitants. London: R. Ackermann, 1821. Original black turkey-backed boards, smooth gilt spine, uncut; folding cloth case. (27.5 x 19. 25 cm); vi, 118, [2] pp., with 4 pp. adverts; hand-colored aquatint title vignette and 27 plates. Very light wear but a fine, uncut copy in what appear to be original boards. Marston Library (inscription on pastedown dated 1826); Richard Boyle, Viscount Dungarvon (bookplate); gift of Lionel Robinson, 1947; Joel Spitz (bookplate).This is the earliest work on Madeira listed in Abbey. Laid-in at the rear is a brief pamphlet on the benefits of the island to invalids. The attractive plates are unsigned, and are watermarked 1821. An advertisement for The History of Johnny Que Genus, illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson appears at the end. Abbey Travel 189; Colas 1455; Lipperheide 1581; Tooley 150.
