Date: 1865 Description: Lithographed map mounted on cardboard, lightly hand-colored, dissected into 30 pieces. 27.5x34.5 cm (11¾x13½") assembled, with original color lithographed two-part box measuring 14x17 cm (5½x6¾"). Jigsaw puzzle map of the United States, an attempt to make learning geography fun as well as educational. The illustration on the box shows white men teaching Native Americans geography. None of the pieces is interlocking, all are simple geometrical figures with straight sides. Jigsaw maps by Colton first appeared in the 1850s; as did those by Mitchell. This map first appeared in Colton's Cabinet Atlas, 1859, and in some of his later school atlases. This was a Christmans present to Charles(?) Murray, December 25, 1867, this written in pencil on inside of box cover.
