The scarce 1859 edition of Colton's General Atlas, with maps of the various states and regions of the U.S. and the rest of the world. Among the more remarkable maps in this edition is "Colton's Territories of New Mexico and Utah," which has Utah, New Mexico and Arizona parallel to each other, in that order, with Arizona named but only in ghost-like letters, all three stretching westward to the California border. There is a large, double-page map of Texas, an interesting map of the northwest with Washington what was later Idaho and portions of Montana, and many other interesting configurations and features as the American West was gradually forming itself into its present familiar states. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers detached (but present), spine mostly missing, edge wear, rubbing; front free endpaper and frontispiece loosely laid in, foxing, occasional minor stains; maps very good with bright original hand-coloring; binding somewhat worn and in need of repair.
