Colton Date: 1860 Description: With 104 hand-colored maps & plans, etc. (7 are double-page), plus insets, and 5 other single-page maps not colored, all on 100 map-sheets; a steel-engraved plate before the title page and a double-page hand-colored engraving of the major mountains and rivers of the world, after the title page. (Folio) 44x37.5 cm. (17¼x14¾"), original half black morocco and brown cloth, front cover lettered in gilt. Contains numerous sought after single page state maps with city insets and many U.S. city maps. The double page maps are of: the World; the United States; New York and Adjacent Cities; State of New York; Texas; Kansas and Nebraska; and England. With 47 maps focusing on the United States. The map of the United States showing an early configuration of the American West as it was gradually forming itself into its present familiar states: much of the Upper Plains marked Nebraska and Dakota; Washington extends to include much of present-day Idaho; a much larger New Mexico is directly above Arizona and both extend from Texas to California; and, although Nevada is colored differently and lightly marked Nevada, it is still part of Utah. The Utah/New Mexico map shows a truncated Nevada, not yet named; New Mexico extends from Texas west to California, with Arizona below it but not named. The Texas map includes insets of the Northern Part of Texas (colored), Sabine Lake, and Galveston Bay. Full-page California map with inset of San Francisco. Single page city plans include Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and Georgetown, Savannah/Charleston, Louisville/New Orleans, Pittsburgh/Cincinnati, St. Louis/Chicago, London (black and white), and Paris (black and white). Plus many maps of North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceanica. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers worn, stained, front detached; some darkening and occasional light dampstaining to contents, some light foxing; overall very good. Item number: 216650
