Title: Colton's Condensed Octavo Atlas of the Union: Containing Maps of All the States and Territories of the United States of America Author: Colton, Joseph Hutchins Place: New York Publisher: J.H. Colton, Publisher Date: 1865 Description: 5, [3] pp. text + 25 double-page hand-colored lithographed maps, one folding. (8vo) 23.5x16 cm. (9¼x6¼"), original gilt-lettered cloth. Second Edition. Second edition of this interesting atlas, which includes some remarkable regional maps of the American West, including an early appearance of Montana on a map; an unusual New Mexico & Utah combination; and a strange Texas configuration with New Mexico's border extending nearly to the middle of Texas. The maps are derived from Colton's Map of the United States, and are similar to Colton's Illustrated Cabinet Atlas of 1859. There is a map of "Nebraska, Dakota and Montana" (which also includes Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, etc.), and about half of Montana also appears on the map of California and Idaho, which also includes Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. Warren Heckrotte remarks: "Wheat states that 'Map of Nebraska, Dakota and Montana' in [1864] first edition marks first appearance of map of Montana; however Bancroft's Map of the Pacific States, 1864, 2nd issue shows Montana also." Provenance: Barney Rosenthal, 12/77 References: Phillips Atlases 1387 (1864 edition). Lot Amendments Condition: Wear to binding, spine dampstained; Some foxing and soiling within, a few maps starting to come loose, one with creases; dampstains on last several maps, final map with marginal loss of about one inch square just affecting map border; good to very good.
