Left side of barrel roll marked "45 COLT" with small Rampant Colt logo on lower left of frame at grip juncture. Standard one-line Colt address barrel roll mark. Lanyard ring in butt. The Model 1878 was Colt's first large large caliber double action revolver but never achieved the commercial or market success of its single action brethren. At total of 17,177 Model 1878 Revolvers were produced in .45 Colt, not including the US Model 1902 sub-variant. 2,899 Model 1878 revolvers were manufactured with 5.5" barrels in blue, making it the fourth most popular configuration for that caliber. Condition: Very fine. Retains most of the blued finish with some thinning and high edge wear and loss along the points of contact with some freckled oxidation on the top strap and backstop. All markings remain clear and crisp, fine bore. Small parts with some nice remnants of the fire blued finish. Grips about fine with some fading towards a milk chocolate color and retaining crisp checkering and free of breaks or cracks. Matching assembly numbers on the frame under the left grip and on the rear of the loading gate.
