.31 caliber, 5" octagonal barrel, S/N 187997 (mfg. ca1861). Blued and color casehardened finish, silver plated brass triggergauard and backstrap, varnished one-piece smooth walnut grip. 5-shot cylinder, one-line New York barrel address, all visible numbers match. Backstrap engraved in an atypical style for the period and reads in two lines PRESENTED TO Capt. H.W. Copcutt. 9th Regt NYZ / BY THE ENGRAVERS AT HARPER & BROs N.Y. The engraving is amateurish with random sized letters using an atypical font for the period and is certainly not the quality expected from professional engravers. Pistol is contained in an attractive modern walnut partitioned case with a dark green velvet lining that contains a copper Eagle & Stars flasks, a blued iron 31PKT marked dual cavity bullet mold, a japanned 100 count cap tin with a green Eley Brothers label, an original Colt L-tool for a M1851 Navy and some modern cast lead bullets. Provenance:The Civil War Collection of Dennis C. Schurr Condition: Good. Retains some traces of blue on the barrel and hints of color on the frame in protected areas with the balance of the metal having a dull pewter gray patina with scattered surface oxidation. Brass with traces of silver plating. Markings remain mostly clear and legible, cylinder scene mostly visible. Mechanically functional, but needs attention as the timing is imperfect and both of the frame locator pins that keep the barrel indexed are broken and missing. Grip with some original varnish, showing wear along the high edges and contact points and scattered bumps and dings. Case and accessories rate from good to very good with the flask possibly an old, high quality reproduction.
