COLOR PLATE] MCKENNEY, THOMAS L. & HALL, JAMES. History of the Indian Tribes of North America... ... J. T. Bowen: Philadelphia, 1848, 1849, 1850. The first octavo edition. Three volumes, full red morocco of the period, covers blocked in gilt with a design showing a standing Native American, surrounded by cornucopias etc., spines richly gilt, glazed yellow endpapers. 10 3/4 inches (27 cm); a total of 120 hand-colored plates (with the accompanying text), plus the colored dedication litho to Washington. Early ownership inscription in ink on endpapers, minimal wear to bindings, a fine, bright set. Within, some toning to the text, but though the guard sheets are foxed, almost all the plates are free from foxing and other defects. A few plates are loose at the gutter. The binding on this set is unusual and attractive, and strictly of the period. Field 992: "The plates are accurate portraits of celebrated chiefs, or of characteristic individuals of the race; and are colored with care, to faithfully represent their features and costumes." Sabin 43411; Howes M129. Estate of a New York Gentleman
