COLONNA (COLUMNA), (FABIO). Minus cognitarum rariorumque nostro coelo orientum stirpium... item de aquatilibus aliisque nonnullis animalibus libellus... (Minus cognitarum plantarum prima, & secunda pars, purpura; & aliorum aquatilium observationes). Romae (apud Jacobum Mascardum) 1616. Small 4to (about 215x155 mm.). (8), 1-42 pp (Purpura), (8), (2), 3-340 (Plantarum prima), i-lxxiii (Aquatilium), (7), (12), 1-99 (Plantarum secunda), (1 blank) pp. 3 engraved titles (title to Purpura with some worming in lower inner part), engraved portrait, 1 engraved plate, 151 full-page engravings (partly some offsetting from text to plates and from plates to text). Pages 183-184 mended in lower outer corner, pp. xxiii-xxiv and xxxv-xxxvi mended in lower margin, a few leaves yellowed, some minor mostly marginal foxing. First leaf after engraved title to Purpura with small wormhole in lower margin. Late 18th century green straight-grained gilt morocco, somewhat worn, small crack in upper joint, gilt inner borders, gilt edges of covers, gilt spine in six compartments, with a gilt urn in three of the compartments, gilt edges. Michael Wodhull's signature and annotations on first free endpaper. Bookplate of C. and M. Lacaita. Bookseller's label "William Wesley & Son, London", on inside of upper board. Nissen, BBI: 385; Pritzel 1823, Nissen, ZBI: 927. First collected edition, first editions of Pars altera and Purpura. Fabio Colonna (1567-1650), Italian botanist. Charles Carmichael Lacaita (1853-1933), English botanist. Sir Sidney Cockerell (1867-1962), English museum curator and collector. From 1908 to 1937 he was director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, in Britain. Wodhull, Michael (1740-1816), English book collector, translator, and poet.
