Types: 115R (text); 7:114Gk (text); 10:82R (title, errata, text in quires q, r, and elsewhere); 9:84Gk (errata); square Hebrew type (two lines each on b8r and b8v). Two letters (AM) stamped in by hand to correct the second title on a1r. 39 lines. 172 woodcuts, including 11 full-page illustrations, 39 woodcut initials (printed from 17 blocks), forming an acrostic including the dedicatee and probable author's name, Franciscus Columna. The Priapus cut on m6 is unmutilated. All initial capitals (without the arabesque and floral decoration surrounding and overlapping them) delicately illuminated in gold. HC 5501*; Pr 5574*; GW 7223; BMC V, 561; Goff C-767; Renouard Alde 21.5. Eighteenth-century calf, covers with gilt roll-tooled border, drawer-handle and oak leaf ornaments at corners, spine gilt-panelled, morocco lettering-piece, g.e., joints and 2 corners restored, head of spine chipped, corners rubbed, 1 (title), x5, F4 (errata leaf), and probably u1 and u8 supplied, gutters of approximately 15 leaves renewed, some possibly supplied?, first 4 leaves with several small repaired holes affecting a few letters, skilfully repaired tears to i3, o1, t1 and u5, with very minor loss to about 20 letters, 7 leaves with discreet marginal repairs, first and last leaves browned, a few other leaves a bit discolored, small marginal dampstain to last 60 leaves, a few other light stains, some slight mostly marginal soiling . FIRST EDITION OF THE MOST CELEBRATED ILLUSTRATED PRINTED BOOK OF THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE. The woodcuts, a few of which are signed with the initial b , have been tentatively attributed to the Paduan miniaturist Benedetto Bordone, but like its many rivals this attribution remains contestable. The authorship, traditionally attributed to Colonna, is also still open to question; the most recent attribution of the work to the Servite friar Eliseo da Treviso (cf. Piero Scapecchi, Accademie e biblioteche d'Italia , 1983, p. 286 sqq. and 1985, p. 68 sqq.) has been generally rejected for insufficient evidence. Provenance : Scattered faint eighteenth-century Italian marginalia.
