Hand-coloured engraved title and 44 double-page charts of the coastlines of Europe, Asia and America (of 45?), all hand-coloured in outline, and on thin paper neatly backed on paper, several folding, 6pp introductory text, and one page list of maps. (Inner margin of title torn away with loss and mounted on a new guard, lower right corners of the first 20 leaves trimmed away with slight loss of engraved image, some soiling and staining to margins and folds, several charts shaved with slight loss of engraved surface, small repaired tear to lower fold of world map.) Early 18th-century English panelled calf (restored and rebacked preserving old spine), covers with central gilt arms of Mathew Aylmer. Provenance : Mathew Aylmer, 1st Baron Aylmer, (1660-1720, binding). AN UNRECORDED COPY OF COLOM'S RARE ATLAS OU COLOM ARDANTE previously only known from the existence of a frontispiece bound in the Dutch edition of the same date. The work of Jacob Colom is extremely rare and, although he was active for 35 years or more as a publisher of sea charts and pilot books, relatively few have survived. His major work was the Vyerighe Colom first published from 1632 and was still being issued in 1662 despite criticism from Blaeu for its numerous errors. Colom's sea atlas covering charts from around the world was issued in 1663 in Dutch (reissued in 1668), and in 1669 in Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. This copy of the 1668 French edition appears to be one of the few examples extant. Koeman records the existence of the French issue from a title-page bound into one of the two known copies of the Dutch isssue of 1668 (sold by Rosenthal in Munich in 1915). The later English ownership is interesting in that Baron Aylmer, who took part in the battle of La Hogue, later became a Rear-Admiral and Governor of Chelsea Hospital. The chart of South America in this copy is backed onto another sea chart of Madeira. The list of maps in this copy calls for 45 charts, the same number as the Dutch edition of the same date.
