Title: Collection of some 165 autographed items, most by late 19th-early 20th century American authors, with a few illustrators and actors Author: Place: Various places Publisher: Date: c.1898-1899 Description: About 115 of the letters, notes and other items are tipped to leaves of an album; the remainder are loose. Album is 28x21.5 cm (11x8½"), half leather & cloth, spine strip lacking. Astonishing autograph collection assembled by one Leonie A. Millard of Troy, New York - she evidently wrote relentlessly to authors of the day, many of them women, and they responded in kind. So while some are simple signatures, the great majority are cards or letters, sometimes sentiments or greetings, others letters of some detail. Among the respondents are John Kendrick Bangs, Edward E. Hale, Lotta Crabtree, John Burroughs, Charles F. Lummis, Kate Sanborn, Anthony Hope Hopkins, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Thomas Nelson Page, A.B. Frost, Owen Wister, Mabel Osgood Wright, Julia Ward Howe, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Charles Dudley Warner, Elizabeth Custer, Ina Coolbrith, and others. Millard would place small portraits next to many of the autographs, clipped from magazines perhaps, and there are a number of loose portraits present, for future use. The collection includes, but is not limited to: John Kendrick Bangs Edward E. Hale Edward Eggleston Lotta Crabtree Maude Adams May Irwin [Mrs.] Leslie Carter [stage name of Caroline Louise Dudley] Moses Coit Tyler John Burroughs Thomas Wentworth Higginson Thomas Bailey Aldrich Lee Meriwether (the author, not the actress) Kate Douglas Wiggin (two) Martha Finley Laurel Richards Charles F.
