Title: Collection of 21 letters to Eugene Field, or in regard to him Author: ** Place: Various places Publisher: Date: 1885-95 Description: Comprises: Four 1-page ALs to Eugene Field. Three on letterheads, one on a plain sheet. Each measures approximately 11x8, and are tipped in pairs of two letters on stiff backing. The ALs include one from W.C. Buskett of Helena, Montana dated Jany 28, 1893 and suggests Field write a book called "Julia and the children." Another ALs is from Jacob Klein of St. Louis, dated March 30th, 1893. Klein, a judge, knew Field's father, and in the letter asks for a large paper copy of the "Second Book of Verse." * Two letters about Eugene Field, not addressed to him. 1-page TLs and 1-page ALs, each approximately 10½x8. * 2 letters to Field requesting written submissions. 1 TL from the Bancroft Co. and 1 TLs from The Christian Union. Each approximately 10¾x8½. * 13 ALs, each tipped (with three others) along one edge to stiff backing. Total of 4 ALs on each stiff backing. Generally the content of the letters are requests for written materials for various publications, but also includes friendly invitations to lunch or dinner, requests for advice, and other friendly correspondence with other bibliophiles and/or writers. Each approximately 8x4¾, and range from two pages to four pages of hand-written letters and notes. Each printed on letterheads from various places in London, Chicago, Massachusetts, Indiana and New York. Dates vary from 1885-1895. Also includes: 1 print from a photograph portrait of Field, 15x11. Tipped along one edge to stiff backing. * 1 typescript of the James Whitcomb Riley poem, "The Passing of the Backhouse." * 1-page typescript of the poem, "Reverie" with ink corrections. Bottom reads, "Sharps and Flats, Friday, Oct. 11, 1895." A unique archive of 24 items providing a glimpse into the friendly correspondence of the last ten years of Eugene Field's life. Very rich source of information. Lot Amendments Condition: All items (except for one) tipped along one edge to stiff backing; some very light edge wear or marginal finger smudges, or faint crease lines to some letters where folded; overall very good.
