Thackeray (wittily declining an invitation), the phrenologist George Combe (on truth and falsity in religion), William Combe (author of Dr Syntax), Mark Pattison Charles Grey (on behalf of Prince Albert: "His Royal Highness has appointed Monday next for going to London to see the Frescos in the new Houses of Parliament"), Cardinal Newman (thanking his correspondent "for the friendly way in which you speak of what I have written" and wishing "that you were not only in part but altogether a Catholic in belief", 15 March 1877), John Ruskin (looking forward to seeing two young ladies), Caruso and Paderewski (presentation signatures), E.H. Shackleton (presentation signature), John Payne Collier (to Mrs Flower of Stratford, signing himself "J. Payne Collier (823/4)"), A.W. Kinglake (about giving away his books), T.B. Macaulay, Sydney Smith, Jane Porter (announcing the arrival of her "loved Brother" from Russia, 1813), J.O. Halliwell, Augustus Hare, W.E.
