Numbers 1-27, and the unnumbered "Supernumerary Essay" between numbers 20 and 21 [All issued]. Penrith: printed and published by J. Brown 1 June 1809-15 March 1810. 28 numbers bound in one volume, 8 o (237 x 144 mm). (Number 13 inserted, closed tear on p.37 crossing two words, hole on pp.229-230 with loss of a few letters, a few other small marginal tears/losses, some browning, spotting and occasional staining.) Nineteenth century half-calf, marbled boards (rebacked preserving original spine, light wear); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : John Taylor Coleridge (1790-1876), judge, second son of Captain James Coleridge (inscription on flyleaf: "J.T. Coleridge C.[orpus] C.[hristi] C.[ollege] Oxford B.[ound] Feb r y 29 th . 1812"; gift inscription to his father-in-law:) -- Gilbert Buchanan (inscription: "To G. Buchanan April 29 th . 1822") -- William Heathcote (bookplate and inscription on flyleaf, most likely in the hand of one of J.T. Coleridge's sons: "Given to Mr. William Heathcote from the Library of Sir John Taylor Coleridge at Heath's Court by his direction and with his love. Easter 1876 Coleridge"; with a note relating to Alexander Ball on the rear flyleaf) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 1 November 1972. FIRST EDITION OF COLERIDGE'S SCARCE POLITICAL WEEKLY, THE COPY BELONGING TO THE AUTHOR'S NEPHEW. John Taylor Coleridge began studying mathematics at Oxford, but soon came under the influence of George Leigh Cooke who encouraged him to persue classics. He was called to the bar in 1819, but directed his attention for some time to literature, contributing to the "Quarterly Review" and befriending Wordsworth and Arnold. Since John Taylor Coleridge died on 11 February 1876, the Easter inscriptions to Heathcote on the flyleaves at front and back are presumably in the hand of one of his sons, John Duke or Henry James Each number has a newspaper revenue stamp, except number 13 which was inserted later. Wise Coleridge 20. RARE.
