Typical officer's lightweight pattern Levee sword 38 1/2" oa length with Coldstream Guards badge integral to nickeled hilt. Spine of blade with Wilkinson No. 39524 (dating around 1901) and Edward VII Cypher bearing battle honors through "Egypt." Also, with scrolled owner's initials "G.W.C.," likely referring to George Windsor Clive (1878-1968) who was educated at Eton and Sandhurst and commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in Sept. 1897. Lieutenant Clive served for the entirety of the South Africa War 1899-1901 taking part in no fewer than twelve significant actions. He was mentioned in dispatches and received the QSA Medal with seven Clasps. He was promoted to Captain in November 1905 and Major in April 1914. He served in France during the First World War and was afterwards appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919. He worked on the Inter-Allied Control commission between 1920 and 1922 then retiring from the army as Lieutenant Colonel. Col. Clive later became M.P for Ludlow between 1923 and 1945. Sword with original leather field service scabbard. Condition: Light wear and chips in nickel plate. Sharkskin grip complete with wire wrap.
