COGAN, Thomas (1545?-1607). The Haven of Health: Chiefly gathered for the comfort of Students, and consequently of all those that have a care of their health . London: Henrie Midleton for William Norton, 1584. 4 o (183 x 129 mm). Collation: 4 4 A-Z 4 Aa-Pp 4 . 160 leaves, paginated: [16] 1-284 [20]. Black letter, some marginal notes in roman and italic. Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut arms of Edward Seymor on verso, several woodcut initials, two historiated. (Title lightly soiled and with early owner's name scrawled out, small wormtrack on blank portion of title fore-margin and touching marginal note on following leaf, occasional browning and minor staining, one rusthole slightly affecting a marginal note.) Nineteenth-century dark brown morocco gilt, edges gilt (joints and corners rubbed). Provenance : Three leaves at end with extensive notes in several early hands, the first is apparently a 17th-century English translation of a section from De morbo Gallico , discussing guaiac cure; the other is a Latin passage from Gualtherus Bruele's Praxis medincinae theorica et empirica, in a late 16th-century hand. The final leaf contains some notes and receipts. THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION. "Cogan advised students to breakfast on light digestible foods, to avoid overloading the stomach with a variety of meats at one meal, to cut down on salt and to drink milk as a conteractant to melancholy. He recognized that excessive study made students prone to mental breakdown and recommended that they take regular breaks from study to avoid exhausting their mental energy, and that they refresh their minds with recreations such as music or games" (Norman). Drummond-Wilbraham p. 70; Hunter-Macalpine pp. 29-31; NLM/Durling 981; STC 5478; Norman 493.
