Cleveland had agreed to attend the Constitutional Centenniel observances in Philadelphia, but is dismayed to learn that his attendance at additional events has is expected: "Representatives from the Hibernian Society" are "seeking an interview with me...urging me to attend a dinner of their society in the afternoon of Sept. 17. Another invitation has also been sent here soliciting me to attend a banquet on the evening of the same day." When I determined to go to Philadelphia," he reminds Carson, "I supposed I was to attend the Constitutional Centennial; and I am surprised that you should aid in subjecting me to other impositions.
