Wilson, Executive Mansion, 13 August 1894, A "DEPRESSED AND DISAPPOINTED" PRESIDENT laments the defeat of tariff reform in Congress": "I suppose a man very much depressed and disappointed, may write a word of sympathy to another in like situation. We both hoped...for better things...I acknowledge the great and unselfish work you have done in an attempt to bring about an honest and useful result. Much has been done...which has shocked and surprised ...I have...found myself questioning whether or not our party is a tariff reform party...I only intended to express my sympathy with you and my gratitude for the fight you have made for genuine tariff reform..." -- CLEVELAND. ALS to E. A. Oldham, New York, 22 April 1889: "I think it is very unprofitable to attempt to run down the errors and misrepresentations of a newspaper interview. I return the clipping you sent me...You wish me to say whether or not it is correct. I shall content myself in this case with merely saying that the report...is very inaccurate and misleading." -- CLEVELAND. ALS to Charles Krichbaum, n.d.: Complaining about printed transcripts of his letters: "I am tired of seeing letters I write so miserably printed that they appear ridiculous. May I ask you to take a little pains, if this letter is published, that it is correctly published?" -- CLEVELAND. ALS to L. C. Woods, Princeton, 24 June 1905. Cleveland thinks "the best pictures taken of me have been taken by Rockwood and Pach Brothers" in New York, and by "Gudekunst, a photographer in the City of Philadelphia..." -- CLEVELAND. ALS to J. W. Morris, Buffalo, 19 March 1881. Complains his set of Encyclopedia Britannica is not from the English plates as expected; he now regrets the "annoyances" of subscribing. -- CLEVELAND.
