Provenance : SAMUEL CLEMENS (inscription). SAMUEL CLEMENS' COPY, INSCRIBED by him on the front free endpaper: "S.L. Clemens. Villa de Quarto Florence Xmas 1903. Given to me by Livy." Over the years Clemens and his family visited Florence on numerous occasions. He wrote about their two-week stay in 1878 in chapter 50 of A Tramp Abroad and more visits followed in 1892 and 1893. With the health of his wife Livy deteriorating, Clemens moved the family to a villa outside Florence in November 1903. This final stay was an unpleasant one for Clemens; Livy died in June 1904, their villa proved to be unsatisfactory, and their landlady was intolerable. [ Laid-in :] Autograph letter signed to Clemens from his daughter Clara and an autograph note from his daughter Jean.
