Small 4to, ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S SHEEP, gilt-lettered red and black roan spine labels, some rubbing, slight staining to a few leaves. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, with early issue points: THE RARE STATE 1 OF P. 283 WITH THE ENGRAVING IN THE ORIGINAL STATE before defacement, the leaf integral to the original quire ("In this original state the leaf has been seen only in early prospectuses and in leather bound copies of the published book"--BAL); "was" for "saw" on p. 57, line 23; the "Him and another Man" plate listed in the list of illustrations as being on p. 88; state 1 (2?) of the pagination on p. 155 with the final "5" lacking; state 2 of title-leaf (a cancel); state 2 of portrait frontispiece; final leaf blank. Illustrations by E.W. Kemble. BAL 4515; Grolier American 87; Peter Parley to Penrod, pp. 75-76. A very good copy in the rare sheep binding, usually found in poor condition.
