CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne (i.e. Mark Twain, 1835-1910)-- Portrait, mirror image half length facing left, signed lower left Ego , oil on canvas stamped on the reverse Winsor & Newton 38 Rathbone Place, London W . (9 x 8¾in. 23 x 19.5cm.). Clemens, the American author, travelled to Europe on several occasions; in Europe in 1867-68, in 1872 to England, in June and July of 1873 to England and Belgium, from February to September 1879 to Paris, Belgium, Holland and England, before a protracted stay from 1891 until 1900. During this last sojourn, for health and financial reasons, he resided in various places, and made occasional business trips back to the United States. Possibly it was on this last protracted stay in Europe that this picture, apparently a self-portrait, was given by Clemens to Marthe Madelaine Marie Ghislaine Gustavine Campbell, née Campy, a lady of French birth and residing in Namur. She had a wide circle of friends in the artistic world, amongst whom was Samuel Clemens. Before and after her marriage she spent much time in London, residing in Tavistock Square and Holland Park, and in Belgium, and died in the mid-1930's during a journey to Ecuador. After her death the picture was bequeathed to her son, thence by descent.
