Wood-engraved frontispiece and illustrations, 32 pages of publisher's advertisements at the end dated Sept. 1899 (some light staining and spotting). Original blue cloth stamped and lettered in blind and gilt (extremities rubbed). Provenance : Mrs J. Ian Ansdale, Josephine Watts, ?Herbert Percy (signatures beneath presentation inscription); newspaper clippings from the New York Globe relating to the author's honorary degree from Oxford and return trip on the "Minnetonka" laid down on front free endpaper; original photograph of the author on board the ship, inscribed, "Taken on the Minnetonka by me, ?INHS". FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, the front pastedown inscribed, "Truly Yours, S. L. Clemens (Mark Twain), July 18/07."
