Apud [P.J. & Corn.] Hackios”, 1676-1677. 2 Vols.: [20],506,434,78 index and 468,416,[104 index] pp. With engraved frontisp., 2 different woodcut printer’s devices on title & 1 full-p. engraving (dep. a portrait of Cicero). 8vo (ca. 18,5 x 11,5 cm.), late 17th-cent. unif. calf, gilt ribbed spine with red morocco letterpiece. – LUCRETIUS CARUS, T. De Rerum Natura Libri Sex. Birminghamiae: Typis Johannis Baskerville, 1773, [2],214[=218] pp. Small 8vo (ca. 18,5 x 11 cm.), later boards, uncut. (3x) ¶ Ad 1: Dibdin I, p. 423 (“These are beautifully and accurately printed volumes, by the Elzevirs; and class in the best variorum set of Cicero’s works”). Schweiger I, p. 162 (“Sauber und gesucht”). Moss I, p. 329 (“This edition is the most correct and convenient one yet published”). Willems (Les Elzevier) 1525. Complete set of a scholarly edition of Cicero’s “Letters to Friends” edited by the German classical scholar Johann Georg Graevius (1632-1703) comprising i.a. extensive notes & indices by the Italian humanist Paulus Manutius (1512-1574) & the German classical scholar Johann Friedrich Gronovius (1611-1671). – A few minor imperfections (upper joint of vol. I sl. weakening at foot, engr. frontisp. partly strengthened with paper in outer blank margins, owner’s entry in black ink on title in vol. II, occ. sl. foxed/ browned), but nevertheless an attractively bound set in good condition. ¶ Ad 2: Dibdin II, p. 203. Schweiger I, p. 577. Beautiful edition of Lucretius’ philosophical poem “On the Nature of Things” printed on LARGE PAPER by the English type-designer & printer JOHN BASKERVILLE (1706-1775). – Spine expertly rebacked, covers sl. rubbed/ worn (along extremities). Erratic pagination between pp. 128-132 (but text is complete). Tiny pinhole in leaf A6 (with loss of 1 letter), occ. sl. foxed/ browned, but else in good condition.
