CIVIL WAR]. SCHOFIELD, John M. (1831-1906), Major General, Union Army . Three autograph telegrams signed ("J M Schofield") to Generals William T. Sherman and Henry W. Halleck, Raleigh, NC, 4 May 1865. 2 pages, 4to, 2 telegrams to Halleck written on the same leaf, lined paper , in fine condition. IN THE WAKE OF JOHNSTON'S SURRENDER. Eight days after Confederate General Joseph Johnston's surrender to William T. Sherman, General Schofield, former commander of the Army of the Ohio and a corps commander during the campaign in the Carolinas, writes his commanding general regarding the situation in North Carolina: "Halleck's order must have been countermanded, for I have heard nothing of his troops in this state. I went to Greensboro on the 2 d and returned yesterday. Concluded satisfactorily all details with Genl Johnston. I have a dispatch to you from Genl [James] Wilson dated at Macon April 30th saying he had disregarded the order to resume hostilities it being of an earlier date than yours...No doubt he has received your orders sent after Johnston's surrender and acted upon them." Wilson, having recently outmaneuvered Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest during a raid on Selma, played a key role in the surrender of the army of Richard Taylor which occurred on the date of this telegram. Schofield also queries Halleck about paroled Confederate soldiers: "A number of officers and men of both Lee's and Johnston's armies whose homes are in the western states desire to pass through the northern states to their homes. Can they be permitted to do so? Can transportation be furnished in any case?" In a separate telegram to Halleck, he notes the end of Sherman's service in the Carolinas: "Genl Sherman having relinquished command in this state, I now belong, as I understand it, to your military division. Please inform me whether I am right." (2)
