Phisterer was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Stones River. At 32 years old, Phisterer enlisted as a private and was mustered into the 18th US Infantry on 7/31/1861 serving for the entirety of the war and later, transferred on 5/19/1869 to the 7th US Infantry, eventually mustering out on 8/4/1870. He was continually promoted reaching the rank of captain on 2/14/1866. -- BOYCE, Charles William (b. ca 1842). A Brief History of the Twenty-eighth Regiment New York State Volunteers. Buffalo, NY: C.W. Boyce, [ca 1896]. Boyce enlisted as a private on 5/11/1861 and was mustered into Co. D of the 28th NY Infantry on 5/22/1861.
