Printed broadside, 12 x 18.5 in., recruiting for the 106th Regiment New York State Volunteers. WANTED for the 106th REGIMENT...1000 ABLE-BODIED MEN! Top center features a small 4 x 1.5 in. spread-winged eagle carrying an American flag. Rates of pay are listed on the broadside followed by a call for Steady, active, sober, and healthy men, between the ages of eighteen and forty-five years, who wish to join a FIRST CLASS REGIMENT, composed of the sturdy sons of Northern New York, commanded by competent officers, and who wish to be provided with good quarters, good pay and good rations, will lose no time in reporting at company head-quarters, or at the rendezvous at Ogdensburgh. A few NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MUSICIANS WANTED! The poster promotes the financial incentives offered to those who enlist $25 OF THE $100 BOUNTY! AND ONE MONTH'S PAY, Will be paid to each volunteer as soon as the Company is organized and mustered into service. Signed in type by Col. S. F. Judd, Commanding Officer. Printed by Republican and Daily Journal Steam Presses, Ogdensburgh, New York. Though undated, this recruitment poster most likely dates from July or August of 1862. It was on July 2, 1862, that President Abraham Lincoln issued yet another call for additional volunteers ahead of what many correctly believed was an imminent draft. The poster notes The President has called for 300,000 Men! And New York must furnish her quota. If a sufficient number do not volunteer it is highly probable a draft may be resorted to. The 106th regiment, also known as the St. Lawrence County Regiment, was organized at Ogdensburgh and mustered into service for a three-year enlistment on August 27, 1862. The 106th engaged in extended periods of fighting and major battles including Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co. Condition: Small losses along edge lines and slight creasing along vertical fold line. Pencilled note bottom rear side. Overall good condition. Note that broadside is incomplete with lines for Recruiting Officer and location left blank.
