Recruits Wanted for the Tenth Legion! 56th New York Volunteers.
Middletown, NY: Whig Press, [March 1864]. Broadside (870 x 600 mm). Illustrated with the American eagle emblem of the regiment. Condition : toned, tears repaired at an early date with resulting white staining, a few letters in manuscript facsimile. Framed. The broadside continues by offering an $852 bounty to veterans and $677 to recruits and states: “Be not deceived; no other Regiment receives any larger Bounty. Every man enlisting in this Regiment will be protected from the cupidity of Bounty Brokers and no one will be allowed to plunder the Soldier by discounting his bond.” After listing the various recruiting officers and they locations, the broadside adds that “drummers and musicians for a band will be enlisted.” The bottom of the broadside lists Colonel Van Wyck’s speaking engagements in Orange County, NY. A rare recruiting broadside, no doubt issued to raise a force for the Spring campaigns.
