Beschreibung:

Printed broadside, 15.25 x 21.5 in. Carrier's Address New York Times, Civil War imprint with a message to readers. New York: Dodge and Grattan, 1864. These "carriers' addresses" were a tradition beginning with some of the earliest newspapers, usually delivered on or around New Year's Day with an appeal for a holiday gift or donation from subscribers. Newspaper carriers were often printers' apprentices, and so they would try to show off all of the newest and finest printing techniques, as seen in the example here, embellished with intricate borders and patriotic imagery in support of the Union cause. This copy, printed for New Year's Day 1864, is of special interest due to the poem's Civil War content, with stanzas framing the conflict as the preserving of liberty on earth as a hope for all, from American slaves to Russian serfs, plus several stanzas referencing Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Condition: Very good condition. One horizontal and one vertical fold and very minor chipping at the bottom edge.
