Beschreibung:

Partially printed document, 10.5 x 14 in. (sight), Albany, NY, 9 Feb. 1864. Signed by Horatio Seymour as Governor of New York. Appointment of Elijah Hartwell as First Lieutenant of the 10th Cavalry. Hartwell enlisted in September 1861 as a sergeant. He re-enlisted in Jan. 1864 and received this promotion shortly thereafter. The following year he was promoted to Captain before mustering out in July 1865. The unit first saw active service at the second Manassas campaign, then at Fredericksburg. It was active in Stoneman's raid at Chancellorsville. It saw its hardest fighting at Brandy Station, Middleburg, Sulphur Springs, Bristoe, and subsequent skirmishes and battles. It was present in the Eastern Theater right through the Appomattox campaign. Horatio Seymour was born into a political family. He was the war-time governor of New York and in 1868 ran as a Democrat with Francis Blair for the presidency. He had little chance against the popular Grant, carrying only New York and a few other eastern states (NJ, DE, MD) plus Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana and Oregon. Condition: Water stains at top. Some discoloration in lower margin. Hand lettering fading a bit.
