CIVIL WAR]. MOSBY, John Singleton (1833-1916), Colonel, Confederate army. Partly printed check, endorsed and signed on verso ("John S. Mosby"), Alexandria, Virginia, 21 October 1868. 1 page, oblong, 72 x 192 mm. (27/8 X 7½ in.), attractively engraved check on the First National Bank of Alexandria, orange 2-cent Washington stamp, virtually invisible triangular slit cancellations. Fine. A RARE MOSBY CHECK. Drawn on the First National Bank of Alexandria by Alfred Glascock of Glascock & Fletcher, to pay Mosby the sum of $50.00. Mosby signs the verso, adding "Atto.[rney] for Alfred Glascock," and "Credit my acct. Jno. Spilman." Three years earlier, Mosby disbanded his highly successful independent cavalry unit known as "Mosby's Rangers," which had grown into eight companies by the end of the Civil War. Settling in Warrenton, Virginia, he returned to the practice of law and became involved in Reconstruction politics; his support of Grant for President significantly curtailed his popularity in the South. Glascock and Spilman (a personal friend of Mosby's), whose names appear on the check, were two of "Mosby's Rangers." This is the first check of mosby to come to auction in the past twenty-five years.
