He was brevetted lieut. colonel on March 13, 1865, but is not listed as ever having been a full bird colonel as the eagle straps indicate. The 4th Wisconsin Cavalry served exclusively in the western theater primarily in the Department of the Gulf and compiled an extensive war record having lost 117 officers and men in battle.
