Civil War Medical Straps and Hat Wreath of Surgeon A.H. Van Norstrand, 4th Wisconsin Cavalry,

including a pair of colonel's straps with silver eagle on green backing and embroidered hat insignia having old English M.S. within wreath. The pair identified by an piece of old paper inked, Respectfully/A.H. Van Norstrand/Surgeon 4th Wis Cav/in charge S.C. hospt. A.H. Van Norstrand enlisted as regimental surgeon of the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry in June 1861 and resigned in January 1864. He was brevetted lieut. colonel on March 13, 1865, but is not listed as ever having been a full bird colonel as the eagle straps indicate. The 4th Wisconsin Cavalry served exclusively in the western theater primarily in the Department of the Gulf and compiled an extensive war record having lost 117 officers and men in battle. Provenance: Ex Pete and Jackie Kersten Collection Condition: Green velvet field worn, one with water damage, else VG.
