Boston, MA: Swan, Brewer & Tileston, February 16; June 22; July 13, 27; August 24, 31; September 7, 28; October 12, 19, 26; November 30; and December 28, 1861. 12pp. Not disbound, most are as originally issued, printed on both sides of a 17 x 34 in. sheet and folded to quarto size, approx. 8.75 x 11.75 in. Famous illustrated humor magazine Vanity Fair containing many caricatures of Jefferson Davis, General P.G.T. Beauregard, and southern leaders from the opening year of the Civil War. This was the first magazine bearing the name Vanity Fair, which appeared in New York as a humorous weekly from 1859 to 1863. The magazine was financed by Frank J. Thompson and was edited by Henry Louis Stephens and William Allen Stephens. Its impressive list of contributors included Thomas Bailey Aldrich, William Dean Howells, Fitz-James O'Brien and Charles Farrar Browne. Very popular at the time, original copies of Vanity Fair are seldom seen on the collector’s market today. Condition: Chipping and short tears along edges. Each issue with minor horizontal crease at center where previously folded. Some issues with partial separations at folds. Not disbound, most are as originally issued, printed on both sides of a 17 x 34 in. sheet and folded to quarto size, approx. 8.75 x 11.75 in.
