CIVIL WAR] DAVIS, THEODORE RUSSELL Original drawing probably for Harper's Weekly , The Garrison leaving [Fort] Sumter April 14th 1861. Finely rendered on paper in ink and ink wash heightened with Chinese white, titled as above in ink on the mount. 5 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches (14 X 18 cm), signed (l.l.) with the artist's monogram. Slight chip to one corner of publisher's mount, the drawing in very fresh condition. Framed. Apparently sold Christie's, New York, June 19, 1990 ($1,045). A very fine drawing indeed by this significant Civil War artist; most of Davis's drawings appeared in periodicals as wood-engravings, and lost something in the translation.
