Autograph letter signed to "Dear Gibbs," n.p., 16 July 1840, 1 page, 16mo, integral address leaf , inviting a friend to dinner: "Come & take soup with some friends, who meet Fitsimmons & General Montgomery..." WILLIAM JOSEPH HARDEE, Lt. General, C.S.A. Letter signed to Union General Saxton (holding Beaufort, S.C.), Charleston, 24 January 1865, 1 1/4 pages, 4to, integral address leaf , written just four months before the fall of the Confederacy, concerning arrangements for the sale of cotton to licensed Federal agents (trade with northern commercial factors was permitted in many localities, due to the South's shortage of capital and the north's need for cotton): "I have determined to authorize the sale of cotton within the limits of my department..." -- JOSEPH EGGLESTON JOHNSTON, General, C.S.A.
