Lot of 2, both 5.75 x 7.75 in. albumen prints on 9.5 x 11.5 in. mounts. First is a fine view of several companies of soldiers crossing a pontoon bridge, with pencil notation on mount's verso Tressel work over Tennessee River at Bridgeport 1863. Second a view of a stone tunnel over a creek, titled on verso Estell Springs 1863. Both of these were significant in the spring and summer campaigns in Tennessee in 1863. Southern troops retreated through Estell Springs, then known as Allisonia, during the Tullahoma campaign. Later in the summer, as Rosecrans was chasing Bragg's Army of Tennessee, the Union forces discovered that there was no intact bridge crossing the Tennessee River at Bridgeport, AL. They were able to build partial trestles where the river was shallow, then float pontoons into the middle to complete the bridge quickly. Condition: Scattered foxing. Minor handling wear.
