Circle of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA,
British 1802-1873-
Portrait study of a young woman, standing three-quarter length, wearing a dress with a large black collar;
oil on panel, 46.6 x 35.7 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Landseer, one of the most prominent and popular English artists of the nineteenth century, is primarily recognized for his animal paintings; however, he also possessed considerable skill as a portrait artist. Although he identified mainly as a painter of animal subjects his portraits were in high demand among his patrons. These ranged from depictions of family members and aristocrats, to charming images of children with their pets and pastimes, with the present work somewhat recalling a portrait study by Landseer of Catherine Seyton which sold at Christie's, London, on 25 May 2022 (lot 72).
