Poet, musician and courtier, Aquilano was one of the most popular poets of his day. He wrote over 350 strambotti , a verse form he made his own, and over 100 sonnets. The title woodcut of a poet playing the lute is a clear reference to Aquilano's well-known muscial adaptations of Petrarch lyrics accompanied on the lute. Sander 6943; Essling 1221.
