Cicero, Marcus Tullius. M. T. Ciceronis Orationum volumen primum (-tertium). Venice: heirs of Aldo Manuzio & Andrea Torresano, 1519
First Aldine edition of Cicero's speeches, which Renouard calls "Très belle", with prefaces addressed to Leo X and his secretaries Pietro Bembo and Jacopo Sadoleto probably written by the editor, Andrea Navagero.
3 volumes, 8vo (163 x 101 mm). Italic type, 31 lines. collation: (1) *8 **4 a-z8 A-P8 Q4: 320 leaves. (2) aa12 bb-zz8 AA-LL8 MM12: 288 leaves. (3) aaa12 bbb-zzz8 AAA-MMM8: 284 leaves (with the first quire in the second state, with 12 leaves, not 8). (Slight dustsoiling to titles, vol. 2 with marginal dampstaining in the first gathering.)
binding: Contemporary Italian black morocco (170 x 109 mm), sides with single-fillet outer gilt border surrounding a scrolling floral-gilt roll, lettered in gilt at top C ORA V I[-III], edges stained black, traces of ties. (Wear at ends of spine and corners, some moderate rubbing to sides).
