CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed ("W."), to his brother John Churchill (1880-1947), 16 October 1914. 3 pages, 8vo, Admiralty stationery , WITH ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH ENVELOPE AND FREE FRANK SIGNED ("WS Churchill"). "MY HEART MARCHED WITH YOU DOWN THE ROAD FROM DUNKIRK" Churchill envies his brother's entry into the battle zone in France: "God guard you and bring you safe home. I feel about this war that it will devour us all & for my part I am willing when the time comes to pay the price...I heard the crack of their shells for 4 days at Antwerp, & I cd be quite content, I can assure you, to ride along in my place with you all..." He reports telling the commanding General, Sir John French that Jack is in the regiment (Churchill initially addressed the envelope "c/o Sir John French" but crossed it out). In a postscript he hearkens back to the exploits of Jack's namesake, the Duke of Marlborough: "How long is it since John Churchill fought at Lille!" A fine example of Churchill's great affection for his younger brother, and his eagerness for military glory. (2)
